Field Trips:

March Field Trip

For our March field trip we will go to the Ash Creek area, north of Willcox looking for jasper and geodes, as well as other kinds of rocks and minerals. We will meet at Safeway on Saturday March 16 at 8:30a.m. and then caravan to the site. Regular car is OK but if you want to cross the wash and head further up the hill you will want high clearance. Bring water, lunch, lawn chairs, rock collecting tools, camera and sun protection. If anyone has ideas for future trips, please contact Henri Van den Bos.

Club Website

The address of the Club Website is on the masthead of this newsletter. The Website has past newsletters, photos from almost all of our field trips and other Club information.

SUNSITES GEM & MINERAL CLUB

GENERAL MEETING MINUTES, FEBRUARY 11, 2013

President Jack Light called the meeting to order at 7:10 PM and opened by welcoming members, guest Cindy Ball and new member Cheryl Simpson. He thanked everyone for coming out on a cold, snowy, winter evening.

Minutes from January 14 Meeting. Jack asked for a motion to approve the minutes as published in the February newsletter. A motion to approve was made and seconded.

Treasurers Report. Treasurer Walter Sigel stated that with all credits and debits, the balance in the treasury is $6330.75 as of today. The report was accepted by those “all in favor.”

Announcements

1) President Light reminded everyone that the Sunsites Gem & Mineral Club is not the place for any political discussion or political e-mail.

2) Jack has not received any response from the Arizona Archeology Society via e-mail. He was hoping to obtain a guest speaker and perhaps find out if any field trips exist.

3) Jack thanked the following members for providing refreshments for this evening: Judy Bernard, Joan Hammer and Robert Nykamp.

4) President Light asked Zoe Schnabel to give a report on theFirst Aid Kit that was recently updated with new supplies. Zoe said that “it is prudent to be aware of our surroundings that we walk on while on field trips.” Although we have never needed medical attention while in the field, we are prepared for any minor mishaps by having a First Aid kit. The kit includes such items as Benadryl, aspirin, antiseptic, bandages, sting kill, snake bite kit, etc. The kit will be available on field trips should anyone be in need of it. Continuing with First Aid in the field or at home, Zoe said that we are fortunate to have two members that are nurses, Gail Rennel and Dan Ball who will present this evenings program on First Aid.

Program:

Gail gave a presentation on Heart Attacks, Strokes, and their symptoms. Symptoms can vary between men and women as far as heart attacks. In men, there may be chest discomfort, pressure on the chest, fullness and pain as well as numbness of arms. In women, nausea and a cold sweat may also occur. Gail also spoke about hands-on CPR. For CPR it's important to push hard on the chest, between the nipples, @100 beats per minute. Think of John Travolta's movie Saturday Night Fever and give CPR to the beat of the song, Staying Alive.” For further information on the above, see Heart.org. Dan Ball then gave a presentation on snake bites, types of snakes, venom and anti-venom. If bitten, act quickly and call 911 or rush the patient to the nearest hospital.

Intermission and Raffle. In Henri Van den Bos's absence, Diane Brower was so kind as to conduct the raffle.

February Field Trip: Jack asked for a report. Dan Ball said that six people attended the trip to Shakespeare Ghost Town in New Mexico and found that the blacksmith shop was most interesting.

March Field Trip: TO BE ANNOUNCED in next newsletter.

As no further business was at hand, Jack concluded the meeting at 8:30 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Zoe Schnabel,

Secretary, Sunsites Gem & Mineral Club 2/18/13
