The next General Meeting of the Sunsites Gem & Mineral Club is on Monday May 13, 2013 at 7:00pm at the Sunsites Community Center.

Discussion and final plans for the Club Picnic on June 1, 2013 will be made.

Club Dues

Club Dues are $15 for individuals and $25 for a family. Walter Sigel will be collecting them at the meeting or you can mail your check to Sunsites Gem & Mineral Club, PO Box 87, Pearce, AZ 85625.

May Field Trip

The May Field Trip on 5/18 will be to the Dragoon Mining District where we can find Chrysocolla, Calcite, Limonite, Chalcedony, Marble & Quartz. High clearance is not necessary at this time but preferred so as to not set any grass on fire. This is an easy walking trip & mainly surface collecting, but bring a light pick & hammer if desired as well as the usual (lots of drinking water, chairs, sunscreen, etc.) Meet at the Dragoon Road RR Tracks on the North side parking area at 8:30 a.m. for departure at 8:45.

If anyone has ideas for future trips, please contact Henri Van den Bos.

SUNSITES GEM & MINERAL CLUB

GENERAL MEETING MINUTES, APRIL 8, 2013

The April meeting of the Sunsites Gem & Mineral Club was promptly opened at 7 PM by Jack Light, President. He called upon Don Hammer, Program coordinator, to introduce the speaker, Rolf Luetke who specializes in micro photography of crystals. Using a special camera attachment to his microscope and a specialized program, he “stacks” micro photographs on top of each other to accomplish a 3-D effect and then when satisfied with the image he crops them to 4 mm. Most of his slide presentation of crystals were those collected from nearby localities such as Tombstone, the Dragoon Mts, etc.

Announcements

-After the program, following the break and raffle, Jack thanked Judy Bernard and Carl Schnabel for providing this evenings refreshments. A sign-up sheet for May was passed around.

-New member, Reid (“Spike”) Livingston was welcomed into the club.

-Suggestions as to where to hold our annual picnic were asked for. Rucker Canyon is a possibility but we will have to check on any fire bans. The picnic is scheduled for Saturday, June 1st. A picnic sign-up sheet was passed around.

Old Business:

1) Treasurers Report - Walter Sigel reported that the balance as of today is $6421.73.

2) Field Trip Report - Henri Van den Bos said that in May we went to Ash Creek, NW of Willcox to look for jasper and geodes. About 16 people attended.

April's Field Trip on Saturday the 20th will be to the ASARCO Mine, Green Valley. Meet outside at their Business Center at 10:30. The tour will cost $8.00 pp, or $6.00 for seniors. A sign-up sheet was distributed.

3) The Minutes from March's meeting were approved as published.

New Business:

1) Lapidary Lab - Jack reported that we are working through Josh Steinberg, Fire Captain and Mr. Shilling, Administrator, in regards to recent problems with the Fire Districts previous Board Members. To resolve part of the situation, an electric meter will be installed at a cost of $60.00 to indicate lapidary electrical usage. We also have the required liability that was requested, whereas the ceramics group may have difficulty in obtaining such. Jack said that the Gem & Mineral Club built the lapidary lab as an extension to the existing building in 1973 and that we should be considered Primary Tenants and the ceramics group as Secondary.

Since there was no further business at hand, Jack asked for “Good of the Order”.” No discussion followed. The meeting was then adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Zoe Schnabel
