Jotunheimen, March 1994

Henning M organized a trip to the Jotenheimen for a group of ten, largely from a London based hiking club (LMC). We flew from London to Oslo and then headed north by chartered bus. On the first day we took a snow cat, starting in the late afternoon, and arriving at the first inn of Glitterheim Hytte in the dark.

Glittertind (2453m)

Mar. 19: 12km tour to summit of Glittertind; clear, cold summit

Mar: 20: 24km tour Memurlitind; clear, cold summit

Mar. 21: 17-18km tour Glitterheim to Steinbuvatnet, then Storglupen and return; windy, cold, scattered clouds - mostly flat terrain.

Mar. 22: 8km Glitterheim towards Stryggehøbreen; quite stormy

This was the first of the "huts" (Glitterheim Hytte). Hot showers, huge hearty meals and comfortable heating made up for the $9 beers.

Sometimes, we were good at keeping together as a group.

At this stage, Henning was obviously wondering what he had got himself into. We were unruly in the dining room and much worse on the snowfields.

Galdhøpiggen (2469m)

Mar. 23: 19km tour Glitterheim to Spiterstulen; fairly warm, flat terrain, with overnights at Spiterstulen Touristhytte

Mar. 24: 20+km Spiterstulen to Helltingua, on to saddle of Hellstugubreen and return; blowing with short periods of clearing

Mar. 25: Beauty of a day, Spiterstulen to Styggebree then up to Galdhøppiggen Norways highest. Return via Storjurbreen, then nordre Illåbreen (dinner), then Tveriabreen and back to Spiterstulen.

Mar. 26: Spiterstulen to Bukkeholsbreen, then Tressåbreen and back; Blizzzard!

We later packed up and took 10pm bus out to Oslo
