Budget: Hierarchies
Adding Drill Down to Pivot Charts
A common tool in data analysis is drill down.
"Drill down provides deeper insights into the data you need to analyze, by allowing you to dig into specific reasons behind metrics, instantly and easily"

Excel enables drill down in PivotTables and via Hierarchies in Power Pivot. A Hierarchy is:
"an arrangement of items (objects, names, values, categories, etc.) that are represented as being "above", "below", or "at the same level as" one another"

By declaring in the data model which attributes are above other attributes, we can create a hierarchy and enable drill down and drill up as demonstrated in the animation at right. Isn't that cool!
In this section we will see how easy it is to add this amazing functionality to our dashboard to enable better decision making. The hierarchy we will create is Category (above) and Item (below).
Creating Hierarchy Process Overview
Creating a hierarchy is simple:
Load table into the Data Model
Select category/sub category data elements
Select Create Hierarchy option.
