BuildOn

buildOn at the IA!

buildOn's Mission: The mission of buildOn is to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education. We empower urban youth to transform their neighborhoods through intensive community service and to change the world by building schools in some of the economically poorest countries in the world.

At the IA: Every year students from the International Academy travel to an illiteracy-plagued country to assist in the construction of the school. In the past years, we have gone to Nicaragua, Haiti, and Malawi, and other countries.

Meetings: We meet every Monday from 2:45-3:00 in Room 206!

Goals around the World

We build schools with villages that have historically had no adequate school structure or no school at all. We make a covenant with communities- they help us build and maintain the school, guarantee that equal numbers of boys and girls will be educated, and we provide the necessary funds to promote sustainable, long-term literacy with both adult and child classes.

Goals in our Local Community

We promote service and fundraising opportunities to encourage students to place a higher value on their education and contribute meaningfully to both their local and international communities. In fact, buildOn students contributed a total of 1.7 million service hours since 1993. Once sufficient funds for a school are fundraised, student representatives travel to the country, stay with host families, and work alongside villagers in the construction of the school.

Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA):

Students also have the amazing opportunity to receive the Presidential Volunteer Service Award through buildOn! BuildOn is an eligible center to distribute this award after achieving a designated number of hours based on your age group. This award is extremely prestigious and is signed by the president himself!
