Wildlife Habitat and Dark Sky

Green Bellevue volunteers work to inspire and educate the public to create wildlife-friendly habitat on their property; to protect wildlife for our children’s’ future. Activities planned for 2014 are:

  • Establish a new wildlife friendly habitat in a public space with educational opportunities

  • Butterfly/pollinator garden and a monarch tagging event /evening moth watch

  • Two bird walks in Jan/Feb and early April and explore having a habitat/feeder “tour” in Bellevue in September

Community Wildlife Habitat

Green Bellevue supports the Certified Wildlife Habitat project to have 150,000 certified backyard habitats in America. We are currently have about 250 certified properties in Bellevue.

Examples are Wake Robin Elementary, St. Mary's School and the Church of the Holy Spirit whose properties have be

en recognized by the National Wildlife Federation for creating havens for neighborhood wildlife in their yards. Many private homes have also been certified.

Dark Sky

Once a source of wonder--and one half of the entire planet’s natural environment—the star-filled nights of just a few years ago are vanishing in a yellow haze. Human-produced light pollution not only mars our view of the stars; poor lighting threatens astronomy, disrupts ecosystems, affects human circadian rhythms, and wastes energy to the tune of $2.2 billion per year in the U.S. alone. GreenBellevue is committed to celebrating Earth Hour, an international holdiay about setting aside one hour with lights out in honor of your commitment to make the world a greener, cleaner place for future generations.

You can learn more about Dark Skys by visiting the International Dark-Sky Association local chapter web site. Let us know if you'd like to become a Dark Sky advocates so to protect night skies and make this area the best place to live for people and wildlife in Nebraska!
