About Sarpy County Earth Day

Our vision for celebrating Earth Day is to offer a memorable, unprecedented and fun venue for our community to celebrate, raise awareness of the environmental needs in our community, and provide education on Earth friendly practices and why we must do them. The entire county and metro area is invited to attend!

History of Earth Day in Bellevue and Sarpy County

Earth Day was put on the “radar” in Bellevue, when Mayor Gary Mixan, assigned Councilman Don Preister to start a “green team” and in April 22, 2010, proclaimed Earth Day to be “Green Bellevue Day.” In April 2011, Mayor Rita Sanders signed a “Spring in to Green Bellevue” proclamation and the newly 501(c)3 incorporated organization, Green Bellevue held its second Earth Day ceremony. In 2012, Bellevue celebrated with its largest event to date - with approximately 400 people who came out to celebrate in grand proportions. We had our first 5k run/walk fundraiser event with 51 runners, and we had approximately 30 exhibitors. In 2014, Green Bellevue volunteers wanted to attract the greater Sarpy County community to participate in a memorable Earth Day celebration for all ages and interests and the Sarpy County Earth Day was born. In 2018, volunteers from the newly formed Green Gretna joined in the planning and production efforts.

Past themes have included "Do Your Part," “Lighten the Load to the Landfill” and “Pass Up Plastics.” The 2019 theme is “Taking Steps to a Cleaner Future.” The group is asking that the hash tag #SarpyCleanerFuture be used when promoting the 2019 event on social media.
