Tree City

On April 13, 2011, the city of Bellevue offically became qualified for the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA designation.

First Anniversary of Green Bellevue Day on the 41st anniversary of Earth Day - April 21st See program.

GreenBellevue board planning meeting - group adds two new initiatives; Dark Sky (under National Wildlife Foundation) and Water Quality (beginning as a project under Keeping Bellevue Beautiful to start).

GreenBellevue received approval for 501(c)(3) status dating back to May 20, 2010

GreenBellevue marches in the official Veterans Day Parade.

GreenBellevue organizes and presents "Recycling in Bellevue" for the Leadership Bellevue class of 2010.

Bellevue Receives Outstanding Community Partner Award for Increase in Residential Recycling - award presented by Waste Connections dba Papillion Sanitation. 5% more residents are recycling over 2009.

September 2010

First Anniversary!

GreenBellevue celebrates one year with a community picnic and to show our dedication to Mayor Mixan, a commemorative boulder was placed in Faukland Heights Park in his honor, naming Mixan Grove. Trees, Shrubs, and More donated the granite and Bill Worlein of Plattsmouth provided the stone-carving expertise.

GreenBellevue plants 65 trees in Bellevue Parks and the Bellevue Public Library grounds from September 28-30.during Re-Tree Nebraska week.

Green Bellevue has over 2000 hits to the website and over 190 names on our e-letter list.

August 2010

First Parade

Green Bellevue marches in the Arrows to Aerospace Parade! There was a huge turn out to see the parade this year giving us the opportunity to share about Green Bellevue with hundreds.

First Green Speak: Chautauqua

The City of Bellevue and Green Bellevue hosted a special free day of celebration, tours and speakers addressing "Environmental Responsibility: Revolutionary Gardening and Arboretum Designation."

Bellevue is named American Rose City by the American Rose Society - Ceremony held with Mayoral Proclamation - May 24th

Bellevue's new Farmer's Market opens on May 15th - October 9th.

Lillian Rose crowned Bellevue's first Rose Queen and Bellevue acclaimed as an American Rose City - May 10EARTH-KIND® is a university led program that partners with community groups and other organizations to identify and promote regionally adapted plants (i.e. drought tolerant, pest tolerant, lower maintenance) and sound cultural practices that preserve natural resources while still resulting in a beautiful landscape. Volunteers have been working on the Haworth Park gardens for three years, developing one of the largest EARTH-KIND® test beds found outside of Texas. Bellevue has three EARTH-KIND® rose gardens (two at Haworth and one at Everett Park). The work of our volunteers has given the city of Bellevue the potential to become the first American Rose City awarded since 2002. The award is through the American Rose Society. The term Earth-Kind ® and associated logos are trademarks of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Texas A&M System.

First annual Great Bellevue CleanUp is a success! 18 targeted areas in Bellevue were cleaned up by the approximately 100 volunteers who came from Offutt, Stratcom, Green Bellevue, City of Bellevue, Church of the Holy Spirit, 1st Presbyterian, Bellevue East and West, Avian Forest, several elementary schools, and citizens not representing any groups. Approximately 200 bags of trash and recycling were estimated to have been collected. - May 8th

Bellevue's Mayor Proclaims Earth Day, April 22nd "Green Bellevue Day" - April 12th

City Tree Board Approved - Tree Board Ordinance No. 3569, an ordinance to create new Chapter 29.5 establishing a City Tree Board; establishing historical tree and arborist licensing provisions; declaring certain trees a nuisance and establishing abatement procedures; regulating the planting, maintenance, and removal of trees of the City of Bellevue, Nebraska, to repeal Sections 19-60 through 19-65 of the Bellevue Municipal Code as heretofore existing; and providing for an effective date, was read by title only for the third and final time and was passed unanimously. - April 12th

March 2010

Volunteer arborists and members of the community began working to form our first a Tree Board. This group will work to gain the means to add additional forest, plant new trees in the city, education citizens, and work on legislation to ensure the protection of the many beautiful trees we have.

February 2010

Green Bellevue is 55 volunteers strong: the group forms to get behind 8 Green initiatives for 2010.

Green Bellevue launches website at www.greenbellevue.org and unveils a new logo.

January 2010

Community Arboretum

On January 28, 2010, the city of Bellevue offically became an affiliate community arboretum of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. This designation, Bellevue Community Arboretum, is significant because it is the only community arboretum in a city with a population of 50,000; the next largest is Pender, NE. Also, we are the only city in the state to have a 1,400 acre forest in the middle of the city limits.
