Equality and Diversity

The University of York values the diversity of its students, researchers, and staff and is committed to the creation of a positive environment which is fair, welcoming and inclusive, and where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

Researchers (staff and students) who create or select sentences to illustrate linguistic points in papers/talks etc., or for use in experiment materials, should consider issues of representation in the sentences. It is important to be sensitive to gender balance and to avoid gender stereotypes in the content of the examples/test sentences, both in naming and in events described and their participants. It is understood that for certain experimental purposes, reference to gender may be necessary.

The department also has an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee. See Governance and Committees for further information.
