Sometimes things happen that can seriously impair your performance in an assessment or prevent you undertaking the assessment at the scheduled time. If these events are unforeseeable and exceptional (i.e. serious and unusual) you may be able to defer an assessment or take it again.
If your performance in or completion of a summative assessment has been seriously impaired by medical or other unforeseen circumstances, then you may be able to claim exceptional circumstances through the following two procedures:
You can apply for a self-certification for short-term, acute illnesses or short-term unforeseen circumstances prior to submission of an open assessment or commencement of an examination. No evidence is needed to support your application.
WARNING: Not all assessments will be eligible for self-certification, therefore please check with your module leader if you are not sure. You can self-certify a maximum of 3 times per academic year. Also, self-certifying could lead to a deferred assessment which is only available after the end of the programme or in another academic year. This can have serious repercussions to you starting your progression course.
If you need to self-certify, you need to complete the form below before the exam starts, or before the coursework deadline.
For Foundation and Pre-Masters students, please use this form to self-certify for an assessment: IPC Foundation and Pre-Masters Self-Certification Form
For Pre-Sessional students, please use this form to self-certify for an assessment: IPC Pre-Sessional Self-Certification Form
You can apply for an Exceptional Circumstance affecting Assessment (ECA) for assessments where the start time (exams) or deadline (open assessments) has already passed or where applying for a self-certification may not be possible due to the severity of the circumstances/impact on assessment.
If you need this option, please visit the ECA University webpage, read it carefully and complete the ECA form, which can be located by clicking on the button at the bottom of the web page.
If you have any questions about applying for an ECA, please contact the Assessments team at ipc-assessments@york.ac.uk.
