The International Pathway college team is committed to making our department and the wider University of York campus a more sustainable place. We believe that everyone can play a role in reducing our environmental impact, and we're here to provide information, resources, and opportunities to get involved.
Our Project: Growing a Greener Campus
We're excited to announce our latest project: an on-campus herb garden! This initiative will not only provide fresh, locally-grown herbs for the University community, but also contribute to a more sustainable campus in several ways:
Reduced Food Miles and Carbon Footprint: By growing herbs locally, we significantly reduce the transportation distances associated with traditional sourcing methods. This translates to a lower carbon footprint and aligns with the University's sustainability goals.
Promoting Healthy and Sustainable Diets: Our project encourages the consumption of fresh, locally-sourced produce, fostering healthy eating habits within the University community.
Education and Engagement: We host workshops and educational events on sustainable gardening practices. This empowers students and staff with practical knowledge and fosters a culture of sustainability within the campus.
We encourage everyone to participate in our green initiatives!
Join a Planting Session: We hold regular sessions where you can help plant seeds, learn about sustainable gardening practices, and connect with nature.
Volunteer Your Time: If you have gardening experience or simply want to lend a hand, we welcome your help with ongoing maintenance tasks.
Spread the Word: Tell your friends, colleagues, and classmates about the project and encourage them to participate!
Beyond the Herb Garden: Everyday Sustainability Tips
In addition to our project, here are some simple things you can do in your daily life to reduce your environmental impact:
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:
This timeless mantra remains key. Reduce your consumption, reuse items whenever possible, and recycle diligently.
Turn off lights and electronics when not in use, switch to energy-efficient appliances, and adjust your thermostat settings.
Reduce the size of email attachments, delete unnecessary files, and consider using a search engine like Ecosia that plants trees with your searches.
Water Usage:
Be mindful of your water consumption. Take shorter showers, fix leaky faucets, and use water-saving appliances.
Consider walking, cycling, or using public transportation whenever possible. When driving, carpool or choose fuel-efficient vehicles.
