Charlotte Nixon

Charlotte has been teaching for 27 years. She moved to Sana’a, Yemen with her husband, who is from Yemen, in 1993. Charlotte started at an English Learner institute, YALI, for 5 years. She then taught at The American School for nine years, teaching all ages. She taught English, English Literature, Social Studies, Science, and Biology. Meanwhile, Charlotte taught ELs at the Lebanese International University while enjoying a scholarship to take some courses as well. Finally, she moved to Sana’a British School where she taught middle and high school English, Humanities, and P.E.

Charlotte learned a lot of Arabic while living in Yemen. She also learned a lot about Yemeni culture while living there. She loved taking the chance and trying to talk to people in Arabic. Charlotte also liked helping her own children learn Arabic and Quran, which helped her learn too.

Then Charlotte moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan where she has had the opportunity to teach ELs at the Ypsilanti Community Schools. She moves from building to building teaching children from Kindergarten to eighth grade. Sometimes, she is even able to help out at the high school!

Charlotte really enjoys working with our EL community. She works a lot with the Arabic community in Ypsilanti, trying to make sure they feel welcome and included. It is her intention to make sure everyone feels that they know what is happening at school and within the community, so that they may be engaged and help their own children learn, as she did back in Yemen.
