I think that out of every year I have done art in high school, I can easily say that I am the most proud of all of the work I have created as a part of my AP portfolio this year. Not only have the pieces I have created given me creative liberty to branch out with my media type, subject matter, etc, I have also learned so much through my research. It has felt so different to me than a normal history class in that not only have I learned the historical context of the stories of these women, but I have truly felt connected to their stories through the art I have created. To create art that portrayed these women and their stories was to understand them, and the circumstances under which they made their decisions. Not only this, but I was able to get a very good understanding of the art periods of the time, which I had never really done before this year, giving me a new appreciation for history and how different events truly impact every part of reality, especially art. Overall, I am incredibly proud of all of the work I have put into this year and all of my work, and I am sad to see it go!
I think that as an artist, I have grown to really appreciate how much research can impact a piece. Not only research, but looking at different artists and taking inspiration from them. This year, by researching my time periods and artists, I have been exposed to so many different styles of art and ways of doing things, which I would not have had if I had not put in the time and effort into looking before doing. I have also learned that thoroughly planning pieces in my sketchbook is very important for the way that I work and helps me develop my skills a lot. I think that also, I have grown to learn how to get out of my own head and really take the time to make sure that each aspect of my work and each symbol is clear and makes sense to the viewer. I am hopeful that next year I will be able to take art classes at some of the other universities in Montreal and get involved in the art scene that the city has to offer!
