The Qloset Clothing Swap
The Qloset is a clothing swap open to anyone who identifies as trans, non-binary, agender, genderqueer, etc. The Qloset is a physical closet in the back hallway of the Yale LGBTQ Center at 135 Prospect St., and it holds a variety of clothes, shoes, and accessories that are free to be accessed and donated to by anyone in the trans community. The Qloset holds a few clothing swaps per semester where people are welcome to come take whatever clothes they want for free. You are also welcome to donate clothing.
Requesting Shapewear
You can make requests for reimbursement through Safety Net as a medical expense. Keep in mind that these requests can be viewed by your Head of College! Often, this has been used for binders. These requests should not be denied, if they are, you should reach out to the Director of the LGBTQ Resource Center.
Request shapewear through this link! This is coordinated through Yale's LGBTQ Center by students.
You can also reach out directly to the Director or Assistant Director of the Yale LGBTQ Center about getting shapewear if you do not feel comfortable with the students who run the shapewear drive knowing that you requested something.
Haircuts
Here are some places in New Haven where trans folks have felt comfortable getting haircuts:
Phil’s Hairstyles on Whitney (not on Wall Street): for short hair; ~$20, but could be $40 depending on how they read you
Broadway Hair (ask for Brenda specifically): recommended for short hair; $20 or $30 depending how they gender you
Headz Up Barbershop: short hair, starting at $20, generally recommended for Black hair, especially tight curls and coils
Karma: long and short hair; $55–65 depending on length
The Hive Hair Studio: long and short hair; $25–75 depending on length
Salon J, anecdotally priced based on length/need $35-75, but the website does list price “by gender”
Elegant Cut (Barber Steph): queer barber for short hair, $35; need to take the bus or a car to get there
