Reflection
Reflexión
Reflection is central to building a deep and rich experience in CAS. Developing a culture of reflection helps students to:
deepen learning
consider relevance of experience
explore personal and group values
recognize the application of knowledge, skills, and attributes
identify strengths and areas for development
generate relevant ideas and questions
consider improvements in individual and collective choices and actions
transfer prior learning to new situations
generate and receive constructive feedback
develop the ongoing habit of thoughtful, reflective practice.
Four elements assist in the CAS reflective process. The first two elements form the foundation of reflection:
Describing what happened
Expressing feelings
Generating ideas
Asking questions
Tips on how to reflect
Begin the reflection with a description of what has happened concerning an experience/project. Here you should include:
A resume explaining all the process
The most memorable thing that has happened, to identify what has been significant or influential
What have been the main successes, and how did you achieve them (You and the group)
what have been the main obstacles and how did you overcome them (You and the group)
After the description or as you describe what happened, you can express your feelings about the experiences. Here you should include:
Express all the feelings that you have been able to identify as you have been experiencing different experiences.
How these feelings have allowed you to learn from this experience.
The following two elements add greater depth and expand perspectives.
Generating ideas means Rethinking or re-examining choices and actions increasing awareness about self and situations. Here you should include:
Reflect on the decisions made in the project.
Come up with ideas that reframe or reinforce your action plan. (They have been adequate, you would have done it differently...)
Analyze certain behaviors that have occurred and identify possible causes.
Asking questions means generating questions that allow expanding knowledge about:
Over you
About colleagues with whom you work
About the processes of your experience
The ideal time to reflect
The preferred emphasis is for the student to determine key moments during CAS experiences that inspire reflection, for example when:
a moment of discovery is happening
a skill is mastered
a challenge is confronted
emotions are provoked
achievement deserves celebration
Other planned moments can be key to make a reflection, such as:
At the beginning of your CAS program, experience, series of experiences or project, because it allows you to express your expectations, visualize possible opportunities or difficulties, project the learning you would obtain at the end, and plan better.
While carrying out a project, when talking to other people you can discover shared ideas or knowledge or see the same situation from other points of view.
At the end of a CAS experience or series of experiences, you identify important moments and the achievements obtained from its realization
Some reflections may refer to the learning outcomes that are implicit in the experience or project.
CAS REFLECTION TEMPLATE
Explorar valores personales y grupales
Generar ideas y preguntas pertinentes
Plantearse mejoras en decisiones y acciones individuales y colectivas
Utilizar conocimientos previos en nuevas situaciones
Generar y recibir comentarios constructivos
