How to apply CAS Stages to Service Project

Stage 1 - Investigation

What?

My project is to create recreational and accompaniment activities for older adults who are living in residence X. The elders do not receive visits from their families and only have volunteers on Monday and Thursday mornings. The afternoons they spend their time in the dining room watching TV or playing board games. Therefore, the greatest need of the residence is to have volunteers who can provide their time to be with the residents and to carry out activities that entertain them.

Where?

We are going to carry out the project in Residence X, which allocated in the aimless street in Seville. The residence was founded 10 years ago and is financed through contributions from the X Foundation. It hosts 20 elders who are abandoned. It has two health professionals and two kitchen and toilet managers. It also has volunteers who attend in the morning to collaborate and take care of the residents.

Why?

The elderly population is increasing and there is a significant percentage that is abandoned. This project allows us to deal with part of that number. By offering them a moment of joy and our company contributes to their psychological well-being and giving them the importance they deserve. This will be achieved by carrying out activities throughout the year that are varied and entertaining for the elderly. In addition, when going in the afternoon, we would be meeting the needs of the volunteers who collaborate on that shift.

For what?

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the well-being of the elderly at the residence, carrying out recreational activities other than the daily routine, helping to serve food, and talking with them. As a group we want to be able to:

Stage 2 - Preparation

Stage 3 - Action

22nd of November

Today was the first visit to the residence. When we arrived, we met with the director, she explained to us how it works. We made some questions to learn a little more about the history of the home and the situation of the elderly who live there. He explained that the vast majority do not receive visits from their families. After the meeting, we went to the dining room and met the protagonists. Some are able to walk on their own, others are bedridden. There is a couple who are found to have senile dementia and find it difficult to communicate. When touring the residence, we could see that they have a television in the dining room and a radio. The director told us that they have few financial resources, so it would be very useful if a diaper campaign for adults was organized at school.

12th of December

On this visit, I accompanied Mrs. Rosita while we were doing the knitting activity. With my partner, we brought wool and chopsticks to knit with three elders from the residence who like to do this activity. They taught us how to weave the stitches and how to use the chopsticks to knit. At first, it took a while, but then I remembered what my grandmother had taught me when I was younger. While we knit, they told us a little about their lives. Mrs. Rosita has been in the home for six years and the last time she received a visit from one of her sons was two years ago. She has a brother in Jerez but has not seen him since he entered the residence.

7th of May

Today ended the diaper campaign we did at school. We counted around 300 packages of diapers that we put in bags to deliver at the residence. To run the campaign, we first designed several posters and pasted them through different parts of the school. Then, a couple of classmates passed by the classrooms to notify other courses about why we were doing this campaign and the reasons we were doing it. Finally, today went through the classes and the teachers' room to collect everything we collect.

Stage 4 - Reflection

First Reflection (From the 22nd of November to the 22nd of December)

Before starting the project, I thought that all my colleagues were going to work with the entire elderly group, which worried me a little because they were too many and I had never been in charge of a group, much less of one with adults in need. I was prejudiced about how they would see me, I thought that they would not take me into account and that it would be difficult to relate to them. My expectations start changing as visits were advancing. I realized that we could talk about different matters, that they were interested in what I told them, and that I could learn from them. I believe that the goal of accompanying the elderly is being achieved, because we have been told that they feel good about the visits. I have developed new skills, such as knitting and being more independent and responsible, because I have to worry about what I have to bring to do the next activity and I find myself going home chatting with my classmates about our plans. In addition, I have learned to work as a team and to propose and plan activities, because with my colleagues we agree after each visit on what we are going to do next time and what we must take so that the activity goes well. I have realized that I am good at listening, I like to talk with the elderly, this has helped me get closer to my paternal grandmother. I have also considered the ethical implications of my actions, when respecting the spaces of each one of them, whether or not they want to refer to some familiar issue or their past. I hope to continue learning more about this project. Reviewing the project action plan, I think that so far no further changes have been necessary. The activities we have planned have gone according to expectations and have been well received by the residents. I think the next challenge will be planning the diaper campaign and organizing the first birthday celebration of the month.

Stage 5 - Demonstration

July 6: Project Completion

Monday, July 6 was the last visit we made to the residence. After working for almost a year on this project, I can summarize my experience based on the learning results achieved:

Identify strengths and weaknesses: I realized that I am sociable, easy to relate, and a good listener. Little by little, I got to know the stories of each of the residents while knitting during this year, as we progressed over time we developed greater trust between us. Later I was able to apply this to the relationship with my paternal grandmother allowing me to learn things from her that I did not know. I realized too that one of my weaknesses is worrying a lot about how others see me or what they will think of me. The reaction of the elders (they did not judge me negatively), help me felt more secure.

Show that challenges have been taken and new skills have been developed in the process: I learned to knit, which was a challenge for me because I consider that I don't have good manual skills. I was able to demonstrate this with a wool collar that I wove between my home visits and weekends at home. I also became more independent, before I was not used to riding the bus and now I feel more autonomous because I use the bus to move to other places.

Show me how to start and plan a CAS experience: The table I presented in the preparation stage shows how I started and planned this project with my colleagues. I also have conversations in the WhatsApp group to agree on details before activities or visits.

Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences: I think this is reflected in the timeline of this project. We attend weekly throughout the year and we only missed one day due to a stormy day and during the holidays. In addition, the commitment could be seen with the quality of the activities we did, for example, we worried that there would never be a lack of knitting materials and we celebrated birthdays on all the dates we had scheduled.

Show teamwork skills and recognize the benefits of collaborative work: Throughout the project, we work as a team, from the beginning we distribute each other's tasks and responsibilities and we adhere to that plan. By working in that way, it made our job a lot easier. While everyone did their part, everything worked fine. Each knew that he had to do his job so as not to affect the project and the work of others. In addition, we all helped each other if someone had a problem to attend or to fulfill their responsibility.

Show commitment to issues of global importance: This project has a connection to several issues of global importance such as the aging of the population, the abandonment of the elderly, and the pensions problems for retired people. Our project addressed the need for volunteers to reverse in some way the abandonment of these people, accompanying them. In addition, with the campaign, we were able to somewhat offset the expenses that the residence and the elderly.

Recognize and consider the ethical aspect of decisions and actions: When relating to the elders, we always took into account their personal space. That meant that we first got to know each other and had the confidence to later learn more about private aspects of their lives. We were always careful not to ask questions that might be uncomfortable. Another ethical aspect was the commitment and assistance with the project. We knew that visits were important to them, so we never missed without it being for a compelling reason. Finally, ethics was also seen in teamwork. Each one was responsible for something and we knew that if we failed, that would harm the rest of the group.
