Short stories featuring diversity, heritage, mythology, mystery, adventure, and personal narratives.
Poetry--some classics by Edgar A. Poe, Emily Dickenson, Robert Browning, Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks; and some more contemporary poetry by Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, Maya Angelou, Sandra Cisneros, Amanda Gorman to name a few.
Novels in class including The Devil's Arithmetic, an award winning Holocaust historical fiction story, Crispin The Cross of Lead, a medieval Newberry medal winner and including a Google Meet with the author, Avi, and Esperanza Rising, an award-winning story about overcoming adversity and embracing identity, set during the Depression.
Literacy skills and concepts are introduced and practiced using all the above material throughout the year.
Accelerated Reader is used to help students practice independent reading. Our goal is to help them find books close to their level that they enjoy. We look at where they are reading and work to help them reach the next level and beyond by year's end. Entering 7th grade we should want them to be reading at a 7th grade level to understand material.
Time to read, check out books, and take AR tests is given during our Library time on Thursdays. Students are also encouraged to set a "read at home" routine to help them reach their goal and beyond. Students may take tests during other times under my guidance.
AR points due Friday, October 17th. 😀
