Freelance graphic designer from Southern California, Tyler Spangler graduated with a bachelor's in psychology from California State University, Long Beach, then spent a year studying graphic design at Art Centre College of Design before quitting to launch his own independent design business. Spangler's style of art is colourful digital collage defined by fun, surrealist themes and influenced by pop art.
Tyler has worked with a wide variety of clients such as: Hermès, Gucci, Adobe, Coach, Nike, Adidas, Facebook, Instagram, Rolling Stone Magazine, and The New York Times among others. Notably, for a period of time one of his pieces was the front page for Adobe Photoshop.
Ulterior motive, Tyler Spangler 2016
This piece is a good example of what Spangler's work is all about, the lurid colour and the surreal subject. This image is two images collaged togethor in what I can only assume was Photoshop. The torso of a very dapper gentlemen in a suit has been spliced with a hand in a tense claw position, as if the hand is clawing its way out of the neck of the person, or even as if it is serving as the head of this creature. Both the suit and hand are in black and white, allowing for them to pop out from the bright yellow background.
Its easy to see how Spangler could have been inspired by the surrealist painting movement in the way that this image has an absurd dream like quality to it that is not only unconventional but a little disturbing. I hope to recreate this quality in my own work.
As Spangler's main craft is graphic design I knew that most or all of the work for this project would have to be digitally rendered. I did so on Adobe Photoshop. Any images used were taken using Canon EOS 4000D and any graphics were sourced from freepik.com.
