Analysis
Phoenix (1991), Franco Fontana
The obvious subject of this picture is the abstract shape created by the buildings. Even though it is evidential that sections of this image are in the foreground and others in the background, Fontana has expertly created a flat image. Vibrant primary colours separate the various angles and shapes. The section that immediately catches a viewer’s eye is the off-centre yellow rectangle, this shape is so striking because of the contrast it has alongside the blue sky. The reddish orange section in the bottom right corner is also particularly interesting, its 35-degree angle aligns with the line of the grey building so nicely that it appears seamless, adding to the flat appearance of the overall image. Again Fontana has an extraordinary talent for creating atypical images from very typical subjects.
