Born in South Africa, Grant Legassik is a contemporary artist now settled in London, England. He studied MA Contemporary Photography and Philosophies at Central Saint Martins, London He then started out in the creative industry as a visual effects artist, he has worked under several famous directors including Ridley Scott, Wolfgang Peterson, and Tim Burton. Using this experience as well as a unique photographic style, Legassik has become accomplished in creating numerous collections of photographs. Some of his impressive credits include, being a part of an exhibit at Tate Modern, London, and being shortlisted in the 2015 Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize and the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards.
In particular one collection stands out from the rest, ‘Urban Etchings’ is an intriguing series of work that is made from hundreds of layered photographs. The work is a study of urban environment and its connection to the people in it. This is the collection of photos I will be focusing on for my own project, developing my own work in Legassik's distinctive 'Urban Etchings' style.
Train of Thought, Urban Etchings (2015)
this piece is set in Liverpool Street Station, one of central London's busiest stations, but also picturesque with its grand Victorian era arches and ornate ironwork. This station building is clearly jam packed with many travellers and commuters, this makes it a great place for Grant Legassik to take photos. A place of travel such as this is a hub for urban activity - which is the focus of his work. I assume Legassik has taken his shots using an especially wide lens because of the amount of space he is able to capture in his photo, he has managed to capture the people on the station floor as well as the stations elaborate roof. The high viewing point at which he has captured his shots is an effective way to capture the bustle of a London station and give the end product a significant impact to a viewer. This image is particularly grandiose and impressive when taken in, I think this is down to the large scale of the station subject. The clever way in which Legassik manages to make a collection of photos have the appearance of a detailed pencil sketch is what is so impressive about his work.
I imagine his work requires more technical skill than just layering and changing the opacity of photos but this is how I plan to mimic his style. Some in black and white and some will be kept in colour. I will also visit a train station to see if I am able to get the same effect as the image above.
All shots taken using Canon EOS 500D with EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens.
