Andrea Aravelo
A freelance photographer and videographer located in San Francisco, Andrea Arevalo specialises in still life and portrait photography. She collaborates with both journalistic and commercial clients to produce striking pictures. Her photographic style is characterised by bright splashes of colour and consistent motifs of flora and fruit.
She is a founder member of By And For, a collective of Bay Area BIPOC photographers who provide up their photography services to BIPOC-owned businesses, and is a member of Diversify Photo, Authority Collective, and The Luupe. Notably she has created work for Nike, The Wall Street Journal and UN Women.
This image is a prime example of Andrea Arevalo's still life style, saturated colour and an array of texture. It depicts a vibrant meal of a pastry, citrus fruit, a boiled egg and coffee. These ordinary things are elegantly arranged alongside pretty crockery and peonies in a way that makes them art. The colourblocked background of sky blue and forest green allows for the items to pop out of the colour. The lighting on this scene may very well be simply direct sunlight it is so bright and warm. The light has cast shadows from each items that adds a level of abstract to the piece.
For centuries still life - paintings and photos alike-has contained the same motifs, fruit and flowers, this piece is not different in that sense. However, Arevelo's use of colour provides a fun modern twist, that not only works on a commercial level - in the case of product photography- but also on an artistic level. This is exactly what I intend to do when I go ahead with my own work.

Here I made a mock Fanta advertisement upon realising that this shot has the colour pallete and orange motif of all the Fanta branding. I think this shot would fit right into a minimalist drinks campaign.
