Student Assistance Program

What is the Student Assistance Program

The Student Assistance Program (SAP) identifies students who are experiencing behavioral and/or academic difficulties which pose a barrier to learning and academic success.

What types of behaviors might prompt a student's referral to SAP?

• Withdrawing from family/friends

• Changing friends

• Unexplained physical injuries

• Talking about suicide

• Change in mood

• Defying authority (at home or school)

• Aggressive actions

• Sudden drop in academic success

How Does the SAP Process Begin?

1. Confidential referrals are made to the SAP team. Referrals may come from teachers, school counselors, administrators, and other school personnel, a student or a parent/guardian.

2. Team members discuss the nature of the referral and how to proceed.

3. If the team decides the SAP process is warranted, a team member will proceed with a phone call to the parent/guardian explaining the process and asking if the parent/guardian is interested in services.

4. A parent/guardian permission will either be sent home with the student or mailed to the parent/guardian following the phone call.

Continuation of the SAP Process:

1. Observation forms will be sent to all teachers and specialists who have contact with the student. Teachers and other school personnel complete the observation forms to provide a complete picture of the student regarding observable behaviors.

2. Team members discuss the results of the teachers and specialists who have contact with the student.

3. Some cases may require a parent/guardian meeting with our SAP Liaison. When needed, a representative from the SAP team will contact and schedule a parent/guardian meeting.

4. During this meeting, recommendations for the student will be shared with the parent/guardian

What happens if the SAP process is discontinued?

The SAP team will monitor the student. This means that new observation forms will be collected at a specific point in time to see if changes (either positive or negative) occur.

How can I make a referral to SAP?

There may be times when you do not know how to help your child. This is okay and someone else may know how to help.

Contact your child’s school counselor to request the SAP process.
