Throughout this course, I found myself constantly intrigued by the numerous ways our education system is intertwined with our history and who we are as a society. Through my Learning Essays, I was allowed to explore these connections, particularly through the lenses of U.S. history, modern politics, our capitalist system, and globalization - all personal interests of mine. This content has provided me with greater understanding of why social, racial, and economic inequities exist within our education system.
For my Literature Review, I designed my research around an issue that many parents and educators are dealing with: whether or not students can demonstrate self-control in the age of smartphones and other screens. In the end, I found my research findings surprising. However, I feel these findings have left me with a better understanding of the modern student. Although we seemingly live in an age of instant gratification, modern students have demonstrably more self-control than those of the past. The issue then, is about the choices our students make.
