Globalization can be defined as “the idea that the world is becoming more and more connected through the transfer of people, products, ideas, and other aspects of culture. It is the result of advances in transportation and communication technologies”. This concept is often taken for granted by a generation that consumes products and culture from all over the world, plays video games live with people on the other side of the world, views photos and messages from “friends” they have never met, can order any product they want through the mail with two-day shipping, and constantly carries around a device that can connect them to anywhere in the world. The 7th graders at Harwood Middle School will use technology to examine the concept of Globalization, its pros and cons, and how humanity got to this point. At this point in the year, students will already have an understanding of Self-Direction and Inquiry, the two Learning Expectations they will be assessed on, both formatively and summatively. This unit will potentially show progress in these areas compared to the last time they were assessed. In the end, each student will use technology to tell a “Globalization News Story”, which addresses an issue in the world, how globalization has helped caused that issue, and how globalization can potentially help to solve it.
