Game mechanics are the rules and systems that define how players interact with a game.
They form the foundation of gameplay, influencing the player’s experience.
Game mechanics are defined as any action performed by a player that modifies the game state, that is, the position and specific characteristics
of all objects and environments present in the game at a precise moment in time. The game state, or state of the video game,
is modified due to one of the defining characteristics of games: interactivity.
Examples:
Jumping in platformers (e.g., Super Mario Bros.).
Shooting and cover systems in FPS games (e.g., Call of Duty).
Resource management in strategy games (e.g., Civilization).
Game mechanics tend to be simple: when you win a battle, you get a prize and get a certain position in a leaderboard where your rivals also are.
Some games may have the same mechanic but with different consequence. For example a crouch mechanic in a game like Assassins creed will work as part of a sneak mechanic, making the player more difficult to see to the enemy. However crouch in a first person shooter will give the player a smaller hit box. Making it harder to other players to shoot them.
