Feedback mechanics are the ways a game gives information to the player based on their actions. It’s how the game communicates success, failure, progress, or changes in the game world. These mechanics help players understand what's happening and how to react.
Feedback mechanics can be:
Visual – screen shakes, flashing effects, health bars, particle effects, UI updates.
Audio – sound effects when hitting enemies, music changes in tense moments, voice cues.
Haptic – vibrations through a controller when taking damage or performing actions.
Gameplay Changes – like unlocking a new area, slowing time, or changing character stats.
They are used to:
Reinforce actions (e.g. a loud sound when you land a critical hit).
Indicate status (e.g. low health warning).
Create emotion (e.g. dramatic music when a boss appears).
Guide the player (e.g. flashing buttons or glowing paths).
Feedback mechanics are crucial because they:

Fortnite – When a player is shot, their screen flashes red and the direction of the hit is shown, helping them to react.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – When you're cold, Link shivers and his health starts dropping unless you wear warm clothes. This gives both visual and gameplay feedback.
Call of Duty series – Hit markers and sound effects confirm when you hit an enemy. The screen blurs and desaturates when you're close to death, encouraging you to find cover.
Minecraft – When mining, cracks appear on the block and sound effects change as it breaks, showing progress.
Immediate Feedback: Happens as soon as the player performs an action (e.g. hearing a sound when picking up an item). This helps reinforce cause and effect quickly.
Delayed Feedback: Occurs later, often used in more strategic or long-term gameplay (e.g. seeing your choices affect the game world much later in a narrative game).
Positive Feedback: Rewards the player for doing something well. Can include extra points, level-ups, unlocks, or compliments from NPCs.
Negative Feedback: Warns the player or shows they’ve made a mistake. Can include losing health, being reset to a checkpoint, or getting a penalty.
Be Clear and Consistent
Players should easily understand what the feedback means. Use consistent icons, colours, and sounds for repeated actions.
Match the Game’s Tone
Serious games might use minimal or realistic feedback (e.g. in survival horror), while arcade games can be over-the-top and flashy.
Use Multi-sensory Feedback
Combine visuals, audio, and haptics where possible – it makes the action more immersive and accessible.
Avoid Overload
Too much feedback at once can confuse players. Prioritise what’s important at any moment in gameplay.
