Theme Studies
2nd Graders are Poets!
Check out students who wanted to record Spring Poems, and our "I Never" reflections about 2nd grade!
Our 2nd graders are researchers and writers! You'll want to read our paragraphs on "Changes to Landforms", written in December 2020.
Students researched, took notes, organized thinking, and produced final paragraphs to teach each other about forces that change our Earth's Surface. We hope you enjoy learning with us!
Week of 10/12: This is the last week of our tree study! Your child should:
Do a final detailed (color) observation
Finish writing their tree paragraph from the top-down-web if not already done
Write a personification poem from the brainstorm on p. 8 of the tree journal (video avbout this is includded here -->)
Add any details they want about their project in the last couple slides for this week
Have a grown-up send any pictures...of the tree, the observation drawings, the science experiement, or the paragrah...to Brin and I will include in your slides. You may text or email these to me!
We are starting to wrap up our Tree Project! During the week of 10/5, your child should:
make another observatonal drawing on p. 3 of their tree journal...how is the tree chaning?
observe the bark and write 10 adjectives (describing words) about the tree
start to SYNTHESIZE tree observations in a "top down web" in google slides. This thinking can then be turned into a paragraph on p. 9 of the tree journal. The video to the left shares some information about how to use the Top-Down-Web in the slides this week.
For the week of 9/28, I hope your child continues on our "theme study" of trees:
1) Draw a NEW observation picture on p. 3 of the tree journal (one box)
2) Make a detailed leaf drawing on p. 6
3) Ask a question and listen for an answer p. 6
4) Try a leaf experiment to see the colors in the leaf (you'll need rubbing alcohol and coffee filter or paper towels
5) Read "Why Do Leaves Change Color" on EPIC. If you cannot read this book yet, I made a recording (8 minutes) of myself reading it to you! Enjoy. I learned a lot as I was reading :)
Remote Students are starting a "Tree Journal" the week of 9/21. There are 5 tasks this week, described in this video. Have fun!
1) Choose a deciduous tree near your homoe
2) Draw a sketch (with color) in your tree journal on page 2. (The tree journal is in the left side of the red or yellow literacy folder that was distributed in your child's bin, in the back of the folder).
3) Draw a map to your tree as if you were a bird on page 4
4) Try a leaf rubbing with a leaf from your tree on page 5
5) Read "Deciduous Forest Biome" on EPIC (this is a "read to me" book if your child needs help reading and you are not available).
