Here's the link to online number pieces if you want to practice using that math tool.
PPPsssst....even teachers make mistakes! See if you can find MY mistake in the video.
Math goal 1/19/21: Subtracting (or adding up) on the Number Line
You can check out the number line app to solve your own subtraction problems HERE:
In this video for week of 1/11, Brin uses number pieces to model different subtraction problems, starting simple and builidng in complexity.
You, too, can use the number pieces to help you solve subtraction! Access them here: https://apps.mathlearningcenter.org/number-pieces/
Here, Brin introduces 6 steps for approaching and solving word problems. The math may be on the easy side, but the modeling and documentation is what we are practicing here.
Please follow along with this 12 minute video as you practice the steps of solving word problems.
Then, there are some word problems in your slides this week to practice with!
Please have your white board to follow along with this lesson and do the math with me.
We'll be comparing two 3-digit numbers, but we will first have to change them into STANDARD FORM. Some numbers will even have more than 10 tens!
We will also make representations to see the different values.
The video is 13 minutes but can be broken into 2 parts. We will also work more on this in our small math groups this week.
In this video, follow along with your whiteboard and marker as we explore 4 different strategies for adding 2-digit numbers.
Be ready to tell Brin which strategy is YOUR favorite right now! There will be word problems in your slides this week for you to try out your addition strategies.
We're going to practice using symbols such as > < = to write expressions to compare the value of two numbers. Please follow along with this lesson to practice the concept. We will do more work with this in our small math groups on Monday and Thursday.
First, look a a different representation of 100, 10 and 1 (from Brin's imaginary wallet) to see how much I have.
Then, make hops of 1, 10 and 100 on the number line to see how much more I need.
Follow along with these three problems at home to practice recognizing amounts and doing hops on the number line to find the difference between two numbers.
Please follow along with Brin as we practice making hops of 1's, 10's and 100's on an open number line to add and subtract numbers, and find the distance between two values.
What's the easiest way to count LARGE AMOUNTS of objects? What does a bundle of 10 ones make? How about a bundle of 10 tens? Or even 10 hundreds? Please watch this video and follow along to explore how large numbers are composed.
This 14 minute video for the week of 9/21 and 9/28 introduces students to 4 TOOLS to add and subtract within 20. We suggest you watch the first two tools, pause, and check them out.
Then, you can watch for the final 2 tools and check those out, too!
We hope these tools help you add and subtract within 20, especially as you use "friendly 10's" to made models with your thinking.
