Here's a fun decodable book you could practice reading with a grown up to work on V-E words in text!

Mr. Mole's Stove

Week of 1/19/21: We continue practicing the vowel - consonant - E syllable type, or "V-E" or "Bossy E". The vowel in these words is long, or says its name. (bit --> bite)

Watch the video to drill sounds and SHEZAM closed syllable words into V-E words.

Week of 1/11/21: We learn a NEW SYLLABLE TYPE! The vowel - consonant - E syllable type, or "V-E" or "Bossy E". The vowel in these words is long, or says its name. (bit --> bite)

Week of 12/7 & 12/14: We will again review short vowel sounds, glued sounds, and glued sound exceptions.

We'll also review some tricky consonants. Follow along with me at home!

The "blending board" below is holiday practice of our sounds and glued sound words.

Cardinals_Winter Visual Drill & Blending Board

Week of 11/30: We add "glued sound exceptions" to our toolbox: ost, old, olt, ind, ild. In each of these "glued sounds" the vowel makes an unexpected LONG sound. Follow along with Brin as we review the sounds and spell word with these glued sound "exceptions".

Week of 11/2: We review sounds of short vowels, consonants, and glued sounds. We will also practice adding SUFFIXES to 1 syllable, short vowel words. If a suffix starts with a vowel (like -ing or -ed), we have to DOUBLE the final consonant of the short vowel word (hit --> hitting). If the suffix starts with a consonant (-s), we can just add it right on...no doubling required (hit --> hits). Watch the video all the way to the end to meet my kitty, Caspian, who will also help us spell this week :)

CVCwordsWithSuffixes.mp4

SUFFIXES are pieces we can add to the end of words to change their meanings!

We will practice:

-s (makes words plural)

-ed (makes actions happen in the past)

-ing (makes actions happen right now)

Week of 10/26: This is our final "review week" of short vowel sounds, digraphs and blends before we add some new concepts next week. Please do the drill sounds (and any other drill sounds on this page to practice until all of your letter sounds are SOLID. In the video, I also review the "bonus rule" where we have to double the ending F, L, S or Z in a one-syllable rule when followed by a short vowel sound. Examples: buff, full, floss, buzz,

"Drill Sounds" phonics warm up - Week of 9/28

Follow at home with Brin to drill sounds and blend consonants, short vowels, digraphs and glued/welded sounds to make real and nonsense words.

Please watch this video (more than once during the week is great!) to practice your sounds. This forms the "highways" in your brain to make reading easier and more automatic. You can play around with building words at home, too!
