Southwood offers a variety of both studio and digital art courses. Studio approaches allow the student to explore drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture, with opportunities for mixed media and unconventional media as well!
In Grade 10, students may move into digital graphics or photography.
Grade Nine projects often include:
learning about value shading and colour theory
clay sculpture
tempera or acrylic painting
still life drawing
learning about Prehistoric, Canadian Indigenous, Egyptian and Greek art history
an emphasis on the creative process and critical analysis
plus much more!
We strive to provide a range of activities and projects that help both the novice and experienced art student develop and expand their creative, technical and analytical skills. Students will get hands-on experience using tools and technology such as printing presses, the Adobe suite of imaging software, DSLR cameras and more, all while having fun, of course!
Whether you are into traditional art making, graphics or photography (or all of them!), and whether or not you plan to continue in visual art in postsecondary education, there are a number of pathways and courses to meet your needs and artistic goals. Follow the link below to be directed to Southwood's course descriptions! (Art courses begin with AVI, AWS, AWQ and ASM.)
We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Southwood Art Department!
Contact the Southwood's counselling department for general inquiries or Patrizia Piraino (department head) if you have any art-related questions!
