The Southwood Mathematics department is a dedicated group of teachers who will help you discover the joy and mystery of mathematics!
In the summer of 2020, the Ministry of Education announced a new Grade 9 math course which is now the compulsory Grade 9 math course in all Ontario schools effective September 2021.
MTH1WI
Gr. 9 De-Streamed Math
This new Grade 9 math course enables students to consolidate, and continue to develop, an understanding of mathematical concepts related to number sense and operations, algebra, measurement, geometry, data, probability, and financial literacy. Students will use mathematical processes, mathematical modelling, and coding to make sense of the mathematics they are learning and to apply their understanding to culturally responsive and relevant real-world situations. Students will continue to enhance their mathematical reasoning skills, including proportional reasoning, spatial reasoning, and algebraic reasoning, as they solve problems and communicate their thinking.
Prerequisite: None.
This is a provincial standardized assessment that all grade 9 students must write in either January or June of their grade 9 year.
Extra materials and support will be made available through your classroom teacher.
What supplies do we need for this course?
The de-streamed math course will not require students to have any additional tools then previous years. Students will use typical classroom tools such as pencils, pens, eraser, calculator, ruler.
What will class size look like?
The Grade 9 math class will have the same class size as other open level classes.
Will there be homework?
Students who do not complete the work assigned in class will be responsible for completing the practice at home.
What should I do if my student is struggling?
The Southwood Math Department offers extra help for students. Students should ask their individual teacher for the availability for their course.
Will my student still have their accommodations?
Yes. Accommodations within Individual Education Plans remain in place.
Will it be too challenging for my student? Will my student be bored?
Staff will use high yield teaching strategies to meet the needs of students in their classes - to fill gaps where needed, and to challenge all students.
Will my student be prepared for Grade 10?
Yes, the MTH1W course is a prerequisite for Grade 10 Academic Mathematics.
Will students be ready for Grade 12 courses?
The new Grade 9 math course is a prerequisite for grade 10, and should provide a solid base for success in future math courses.
