SNAP Training and Employment Program (STEP)
OED, WorkSource, is a partner of the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) SNAP Employment and Training Provider Network.
Participants enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have access to the SNAP Training and Employment Program (STEP). The STEP program is for people aged 16 or older receiving SNAP food benefits and are not receiving Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) cash benefits.
*If participants receive TANF benefits and would like employment and training support, please have them contact their Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) Family Coach.
Through the support of a STEP coach, participants get a customized plan to help them overcome barriers and reach their employment goals. STEP may cover training costs and other support services based on funding. Participating in STEP will not impact participants' SNAP benefits.
To get started with the Step program, and to connect with a STEP Coach, participants should contact their WorkSource Liaison or their local WorkSource Center.
The Training Unemployment Insurance (TUI) program
For individuals receiving benefits from the Unemployment Insurance Program and seeking training or education while collecting unemployment insurance, the Training Unemployment Insurance (TUI) program may be a valuable option. Designed for dislocated workers—those who have become unemployed and are unlikely to return to their previous industry—the TUI program offers support for self-sufficiency.
While the TUI program does not provide training funds, it eliminates the requirement to actively search for and be available for work to receive benefits. This flexibility allows participants to attend school full-time and focus on acquiring the skills needed for future employment. The TUI application can be found here.
