There are many other options for identifying and accessing valuable readings, especially as you do more focused study in your own particular areas of special interest. If you are the alumnus of another academic institution, as most of our students are, an alumni membership at that institution may give you at least some access to that institution's library. Indeed, anyone can join the University of California, Berkeley Alumni Association for less than $100/year, and that will provide you with onsite (but unfortunately, not online) access to large portions of the collections in many of the UC Berkeley campus libraries.
For those who live not too far from WISR in the north part of Berkeley, near Solano Avenue (1812 San Pedro Ave., Berkeley, CA 94707), or who are visiting, WISR has a small but very useful library of many high quality books that are relevant to WISR courses, including some required readings, in addition to recommended and related readings. Once COVID is under control that library will be accessible to WISR students who live or work not too far away. We are in the process of cataloging the library, and we expect that sometime in 2024, most of the library will be cataloged, and WISR students will be able to search online to see what books are onsite and available to be checked out.
You are encouraged to discuss strategies of identifying and accessing readings with WISR faculty and with WISR's librarian (cynthia.roberson@wisr.edu ).
Finally, you should take full advantage of The Directory of Open Access Journals ( https://doaj.org/ ). WISR Librarian Cynthia Roberson emphasizes that “This resource is 100% free, full of scholarly and peer reviewed journal articles. Having used this database personally as a graduate student, I can say that this resource has gotten a lot better over the years and deserves another look.”
