Most every WISR online course requires a lot of reading. Typically, there are several articles, or chapters from a text, to be read for each course module. In addition, some courses also have a required text, or even several texts, and students are then instructed as to which chapters to read from each text, either as part of the module assignments, or in some cases as an added assignment. For some course modules, especially most of the MFT course modules, students are presented with a list of 15 or more options from which they are to choose three of the readings.
In selecting readings for each course, WISR faculty have kept the following considerations in mind: 1) identifying readings relevant to the course learning outcomes, as well as often, also the degree program learning outcomes, 2) choosing high quality readings that are not out of date, although sometimes our required readings are not so recent and have stood the test of time and remain excellent choices; and 3) identifying readings that will minimize the out of pocket costs for our students.
With regards to providing you with low-cost access, we have identified several, effective strategies that do not at all limit the use of high quality, extremely relevant readings. First, WISR's paid membership for all of our students and faculty in LIRN (the Learning and Information Resources Network, www.lirn.net ) enables us to identify, at no cost to you, extremely high quality academic books through LIRN's access to the collection, "Ebook Central: Academic Complete." For our MFT program, we require that each MFT student purchase an annual student membership in CAMFT (the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists), so for about $100/year, each WISR MFT student (and some interested doctoral students as well) can gain access to EBSCO psychology journals. The vast majority of the articles used in MFT course modules are drawn from the extensive, varied, and high quality array of articles accessed with a CAMFT membership that are relevant to all areas of MFT study. Finally, we expect that all of our California students to obtain a public library card from a California city in their vicinity, virtually all of which provide access to the very valuable Kanopy film collection. Films from the Kanopy collection are required for a few courses, and recommended as options in a larger number of courses. Such access is free with a public library card from most California cities, as well as many other cities throughout the U.S.
There are a dozen or so cases, when we do expect you to purchase an extremely important and required book that is not accessible in one of the ways mentioned above. In our enrollment agreement, we inform you that you may have to pay as much as $50 to $100 per course for books. We realize that sometimes you may wish to purchase some books just because you may find it a convenient aid to your studies to own a "hard copy."
