NC.4.MD.8
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals that cross the hour.
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals that cross the hour.
Step 1: Lesson Standards & Learning Goals
Students will apply addition and subtraction strategies to find an end time, elapsed time, or a start time.
In 3rd grade, students determined elapsed time within an hour.
In 4th grade, students will determine elapsed that crosses over the hour. Students should use tools such as clocks, timelines, and tables to solve problems.
Note: This standard could include situations which may result in a multistep problem.
How do I calculate elapsed time to the minute?
How can I use addition and subtraction to determine start and end times?
How can I use addition and subtraction to determine elapsed time (how much time has passed)?
What tools and strategies can I use to determine an end time, elapsed time, or start time?
A.M.
Elapsed time
Half hour

Minute
P.M.
Quarter hour
Use addition and subtraction and appropriate tools to:
determine a start time when given a duration and an end time.
determine an end time when given a duration and a start time.
determine the elapsed time when given a start and end time.
Solve one- and two-step word problems that involve intervals of time across the hour.
Elapsed time is the amount of time that has passed between two given times.
Elapsed time can be determined using geared analog clocks and timelines.
Elapsed time can be found by counting on from the beginning time or counting back from the ending time.

Step 3: Lesson Instructions
Prediction
How much time will pass between...
Use your daily schedule to have students predict how much time passes between two classes.
Ex. How much time passes between PE and recess?
Ex. How much time do you spend in PE and recess combined?
Notice and Wonder
What do you notice about the times on the clocks?
What do you wonder?
