Students will determine the area of a rectilinear figure.
Students will decompose rectilinear figures into rectangles, determine the area of the rectangles, and use the areas of the rectangles to determine the area of the rectilinear figure.
Students will solve problems that involve the relationship between the perimeter and the area in a rectangle using models and strategies.
Given a fixed area, students will determine all of the possible dimensions of the rectangle.
Given a fixed perimeter, students will determine all possible areas.
Students learn to apply these understandings and formulas to the solution of real-world and mathematical problems. Note that “apply the formula” does not mean write down a memorized formula and put in known values.
