Learning at Home

There are lots of ways that you can bring our learning home! The more music you make, the greater a musician you will become!

Singing

In music class, we are learning to use our "head voice" instead of our "chest voice." You are listening for a clear, light tone, not a shouting or tense sound. Check out this video for some warmups and sounds you can make together at home!

Here is a video of a young singer on the The Voice Kids. The introduction to this song demonstrates her head voice, and the rest of the song in her chest voice. Can you hear the difference?

Listening and Watching

My YouTube Channel has lots of videos from our units of study (past and present)! Please browse the "Playlist" section to find what you are looking for:

Recorder

Students in grades 3 and 4 are learning to play the recorder! Many students opt to have a recorder at school AND at home so that they can practice the music we are learning.

You can purchase recorders from our Student Store for $5.75 or at any music store. PLEASE do not purchase from a toy store, as these instruments are poor quality and not tuned correctly!!

Students will be participating in "Recorder Karate" in 4th grade. They will learn new notes and songs, and will perform them for me to earn beads. These bead lanyards can go onto student backpacks and everyone who sees you will know that you are a Recorder Dojo ninja!!

Ukulele

Thanks to the White River School District and our White River Education Foundation (WREF), we are blessed with a classroom set of ukuleles! We use these instruments to accompany songs and learn about chords and harmony.

Lots of families have asked me about getting a ukulele at home! Here is a video to get you started at home:

Go to any of our local music shops to find great deals on ukes! At Foothills, we use the Makala Shark model.
