LIRRAPIPE HOODS
In the early days of the plague, The Mists A&S Minister,Rew Payne, had a Hood competition.
I had a largish piece of yummy wool left over from my husbands Knighting tunic that I had been wanting to make a hood for him so I used this as a push to actually do the thing.
Rew was thoughtful enough and Aurelia was kind enough to include an instructional video so I got to work. I didn't want to use the yummy wool for my first try so I used some "other" wool I had on hand. It came out ok, but I made some tweaks to the pattern before I used the good stuff!
Our benevolent Crown got wind of the competition and in Their infinite glory decided that the entire Kingdom should be able to get in on the fun so the date got pushed back which allowed me to do some embroidery on the hood. I was actually mostly happy with it. It didn't win but I made a thing and entered it into a competition, that was a win for me!
A friend asked if I might make her a hood too (that is a complement ... ) and while working on it, I had an idea..... I can make ALL THE HOODS! My 12th night project was at hand :)
I made the hood from the yummy wool and in all, including the original from the competition, ended up making and embroidering 15 hoods AND I managed to get them done in time to give as 12th night gifts!!!
Most of the embroidery is 10/2 cotton, there is some cotton dmc and the pelican's are a linen thread (it gave the birds a bit of a "feathered" edge ;) ) I mostly used a stitch called "whipped backstitch", I am not sure this is a period stitch but it gave me the lines I was looking for. I managed to make almost all of the hoods from wool and linen I had in my stash so there was no braving of the plague ridden market place. I bought the buttons from Bad Baroness and the 10/2 cotton from White Wolf and Phoenix to support our merchants as much as possible.
I, of course, forgot to take pictures of the ones given out so the pictures here are from the recipients.
Thank you for looking :)
