Illumination; painting and gilding
I am a Thinker, a Creator, an Experimenter and a painter. I craft detailed award scrolls with period methods using Gouache and illuminate them with luscious 24kt gilding. I study the Old Master's style of oil painting and have a on-going clandestine passion for period use of watercolors and other unusual pigment binders.
I am apprenticed as an illuminator to Mistress Hilarie the Puppeteer and study scribal arts with Mistress Tatiana Nikolaevna Tumanova. I serve as Seneschal for the Shire of Champclair, I am the Sable Swan Scribe for the Cynagua College of Scribes and I am a PayPal Deputy for the Kingdom of the West. I am also the Host and Moderator, and a regular Teacher for Sunday Night with the Scribes which is serving the artists of the Known World with a weekly quality online scribal night and curated scribal education every Sunday since May 2020.
Outside of the SCA I am a work-from-home fine artist working in both oils and gouache with an occasional dalliance into Watercolor. I am currently taking classes with Master Oil Painter Gary Bergren and I am a lifelong knitter. I have an AA in Fine Arts, and a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Networking, with a Minor in Business Management.
This page hosts a collection of the various small pieces I have worked on in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
There are images I have made for folks for classes including an Arms display for a Heraldry class, the Facebook Avatar Ring Site Tokens I made for Virtual Cynagua Winter Investiture 2021, and documentation for four select images from my Scribal trading card collection.
It was called the Great Scribal War and we were competing across kingdoms for a variety of categories. It was glorius and brought out many artists that had stopped doing art for one reason or another. It was a lot of fun to compete, and I am proud I represented the Kingdom of the West for the letter P.
I won my category (Historiated Initial P) and had a lot of fun at the same time!
This page has several of my featured scrolls, including three recent scrolls never before displayed. Also links to my online portfolio and personal Art website
Why is this here...?
Because life was upended this year, and what would have normally been spent painting, teaching illumination and entering SCA Art competitions was replaced with online events and YouTube videos.
This was my attempt to fulfill my SCA Office and bring art to the people. Sunday Night with the Scribes is a chance to teach and be taught, a place for warm, familiar community, and a weekly platform to reconnect and bond with other SCA artists feeling the same thing we all are feeling.
These are not period, and neither of them are finished, but its what I have been working on during the shutdown so I can master the media and learn period painting techniques. I am currently working on panels and learning how to adapt modern oils to period methods.
I use mostly Daniel Smith's Water soluble oils with the occasional Cobra water miscible oil and Holbein Aqua Duo oils.
