TLDR;
The SPR provides a breakdown of student performance across all the skills we study during a term. Students see their status on on of four levels, ranging from exceeding grade level standards to working toward grade level standards in that area. The report identifies "evidence," marking the best work they have done to date, along with links to review materials and ways to "level up" in that skill.
Everything we do in class is linked to one or more specific skills, part of a list of skills that the state and all schools agree is important for 6th graders to know (I also agree). My job as teacher is to teach these skills to my students and provide opportunities to practice them. I also provide a variety of ways for students to show their level of proficiency through evidence.
Evidence might come on class assignments or on more formal assessments. I know some students have test anxiety. I usually give a practice test, and I'm happy to use that work as evidence if the performance on the "real" assessment lags behind. Other students can show me their understanding in conversations. I also encourage students to use online resources like Khan Academy (link), especially those who want to level up from proficiency to mastery of one or more skills.
The standards report is a live document students and families can use to see where they stand on the skills we are studying. As we move to new topics, additional learning goals will appear on the report, along with the student's level of understanding to date. Links to additional instructional and practice resources are provided for each learning goal, as well as a link to questions students can use to "level up" to the next level of performance. Earning mastery for a standard results in a badge; titles are awarded based on badge counts in an arguably lame effort to gamify the process.
