All students are required to complete four years of Physical Education and Health Education. Physical Education aims to provide an opportunity for the individual or group to participate in situations that are physically wholesome, mentally stimulating, satisfying, and socially sound. Attempts are made to schedule Physical Education classes according to grade level unless scheduling conflicts prevent this.
Physical Education & Health Education or Driver Theory, 5 Credits
All classes are planned to develop muscle coordination and physical fitness. Physical education classes meet five days a week with health education requirements/Driver Theory scheduled during this period. Activities include individual and team sports as well as lifetime activity sports. Classes are coeducational.
Class content includes safety and first aid, personal health, community health, consumer health, foods and nutrition, disease prevention, family life, and the structure and function of the human body. Units on drugs, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, smoking, and socially transmitted diseases, CPR, and automated external defibrillator hands-on training are also included to meet New Jersey State requirements.
Driver Theory class prepares students for the NJ Motor Vehicle written examination which is given upon the completion of thirty hours of classroom instruction. Various audio-visual aids are used. Goals for this course include developing proper attitudes, discussing traffic rules and regulations, developing safety equipment care, and outlining careers in the industry.
Physical Education & Health Education Grade 11, 5 Credits
As per the CPR/AED Instruction Bill: N.J.S.A. 18A:35-4.28-4.29 (2014) which requires public high schools to provide instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator to each student before graduation. The Juniors will be required to pass this course and also have the opportunity to become certified if they wish to do so. The physical education teachers are American Red Cross-certified instructors. The training will include both written and hands-on lessons, with every student required to pass a final written exam as well as perform hands-on demonstrations of all the skills used while performing First Aid/CPR/AED on an individual.Â
