We have implemented grading periods in Canvas. All assignment due dates must fall between the start date and end date of the grading period to be included in the grade calculation. When teachers implement these grading periods, the grades will recalculate based on the due dates, and should resolve the issue of grades calculating for the entire semester.
Please keep in mind that, to create these grading periods, we had to assign each one a closing date. The closing date is the last day that grades will be accepted in Canvas for that grading period. Due to the amount of missing work in the first 9 weeks, the close date for that grading period received a one-time extension to the end of the semester (December 18th, 2020). The closing dates for all other grading periods are set as the report card distribution date, or in the case of the final grading period, the last teacher workday.
It should also be noted that Powerschool, and not Canvas, holds the grade of record. Once grades are locked in Powerschool, they become historical, and changing them becomes problematic.
Two things to note:
If assignments have “disappeared”, then it means that due dates were not set on the assignment. Canvas places assignments by due date. If the assignment has no due date, Canvas does not know where to place the assignment, so it ends up moving it to the last grading period. They suggest having teachers add due dates, and they should show up in the correct grading period.
If the teacher can’t see assignments in the Grade Book, then it means they are filtered out. Adding grading periods also created a grading period filter. Teachers will need to make sure this filter is checked, or it will look like all of the assignments have disappeared. See the example to the right.
