At Wayland-Cohocton Elementary, we believe behavior should be taught, modeled, and reinforced, just like academic skills. Our focus is on developing leadership, responsibility, and kindness in every student. We work as a team to help children grow — not just academically, but socially and emotionally too.
At Wayland-Cohocton Elementary, LEADERS soar by being:
RESPECTFUL
RESPONSIBLE
SAFE
KIND
These expectations are taught and reinforced in every school setting — classrooms, hallways, the cafeteria, recess, assemblies, and more. Students are recognized when they demonstrate these leadership habits in action.

We celebrate students who show leadership through positive behavior by:
Distributing SOAR Cards (gold in color) for behaviors aligned to our LEAD expectations
Encouraging students to turn in SOAR Cards for recognition opportunities
Hosting individual and school-wide celebrations to build community and student pride
Involving students and staff in refining our recognition system as we grow
This year is a strategic build year across the district. Wayland-Cohocton is working with students, staff, and families to develop a P–12 system of shared values and expectations.
These values will guide how we teach and support behavior across all schools. Our LEAD framework and SOAR system provide a strong foundation, and future work will help align and deepen that foundation to support students at every level.
We will continue to keep families informed and involved as this exciting work progresses into the 2026–27 school year.
All Wayland-Cohocton students are expected to follow our District’s Code of Conduct to help maintain a safe, respectful, and orderly learning environment for all.
The Code is a comprehensive document that:
Defines expectations for students, staff, families, and visitors
Clarifies unacceptable conduct, including:
Insubordination (e.g., ignoring directions, refusing to follow school rules)
Violence (e.g., fighting, threats, weapon possession)
Bullying, harassment, or discrimination
Misuse of personal internet-enabled devices (e.g., smartphones, smartwatches, earbuds)
Provides a range of disciplinary responses, including:
Restorative meetings, peer mediation, detentions
Suspensions (transportation, extracurricular, in-school, out-of-school)
Superintendent hearings or law enforcement referral when required
Emphasizes progressive discipline and restorative practices to help students reflect, restore, and grow
📄
Each year, the Code of Conduct is reviewed and updated through a Board of Education approval process to reflect current law, district values, and best practices.
