Prep-Year 6 - one library lesson per week. Class teachers will alert you to your child’s library day.
During library lessons, we will be introducing your child to good books, great authors and series suitable to their age and reading ability. We will assist them to become familiar with the library, use its resources and develop research skills.
Students will need to bring a library bag to each lesson in order to borrow books.
How many books? Prep - 1 book per week. Kindy - 1 book (but will be allowed to borrow 2 later in the term). Years 1-4 - 2 Fiction books and 2 Nonfiction books per week. Years 5-6 - 3 Fiction books and 3 Nonfiction books per week. Parents are permitted to come to the library and borrow up to 6 more books (including library readers) for each of their children.
Loan period - 2 weeks only. If books are not returned after 2 weeks, students will be given an overdue notice and books will then either need to be returned or paid for (if lost). Any damaged books will also have to be paid for.
We encourage and assist all students in K-6 to complete this in Terms 1 and 2. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading in students through reading a wide variety of quality literature.
More information can be found on our Library Google Site Premier's Reading Challenge Page from the WCCS Family Portal or the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge Website.
Scholastic Literacy Pro is a research-based, online assessment resource developing students into successful, proficient readers. Students in Years 3-5 will be using Literacy Pro this year during both library and classroom lessons. Students sit a test once per term which will give them a Lexile score. They will then be able to borrow books at their level and complete online comprehension quizzes based on these books.
The library runs a Book Fair through Scholastic Books in Term 4.
This is a great opportunity for parents to purchase books (perhaps a few extra Christmas gifts!).
Since our library receives a percentage of all sales made, it’s also a great way to assist us with the purchase of new books.
There are direct links on the Library Google Site to Oliver (the catalogue), Literacy Pro and Wheelers eBooks.
Students can also access World Book Online through the Library Google Site for research purposes.
