Year 12 Overview
In Year 12, students begin to specialise in subjects to support their pathway. Year 12 students study SIX subjects. All Year 12 subjects offer a minimum of 14 NCEA credits. Students who want to go on to tertiary studies should choose a course that will enable them to take a minimum of four UE subjects in Year 13.
Note that many subjects can be studied for the first time at Year 12. Entry is at the discretion of the Head of Department.
As a Year 12 student you will study:
English - three courses to choose from: English General, English with Philosophy, or Writing Beyond the Text.
Or
Te Reo Māori
You will choose FIVE full-year options:
Arts - Dance, Drama, Music Technology, Making Music, Design, Photography, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture and Art History.
You can enrol in a maximum of TWO Visual Arts portfolio courses (not including Art History)
Note that no more than TWO portfolio subjects are recommended in one year
Science - General Science, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Human Biology
Any combination of Biology, Physics, and Chemistry may be selected
Students cannot select both Biology and Human Biology
Students who choose Science cannot select any of the other 4 options
Languages - Chinese, English Language, French, Japanese, German, Samoan, Spanish, Te Reo Māori
Health and Physical Education - Physical Education, Health, Performance Physical Education
Technology - Materials Technology, Design and Visual Communication, Digital Tech Game Development, Digital Technology Science, Construction
It is recommended that no more than TWO Technology options are selected at Year 12. Students cannot take Materials Technology and Construction with HOD approval
Note that no more than TWO portfolio subjects are recommended in one year
Social Sciences - Accounting, Business Studies, Classical Studies, Economics, History, Geography, Media Studies
Mathematics - Mathematics with Calculus, Mathematics with Statistics, Mathematics Internal, Mathematics for Pathways, Calculus and Cambridge A-level (by invitation only)
