STEM VISIT

BDU had it's STEM Visit this past week as a part of the IDOE STEM Certification Process and it was phenomenal!

Special thanks to our STEM Action Committee members and the teachers who we visited during the tour!

Stem in our classrooms

Pictured here are students coding in EJ Jzar's Spanish IV/SPAN 203 dual credit course, completing projects to analyze science in art through their ARTT 110 dual credit course with Adjunct Professor Angi Aldrich, and completing projects in Geometry with BDU teacher Lorene Sandifur, all that and a tour of the building, overview of the program and STEM connections, and a student panel! A special thank you to Dave Sekula for leading the committee and staff through this process as well as Wendy Skibinski for her district-level leadership!

This past year Spanish teacher, Melissa Ballesteros, received a grant from WTEF to start our first Hispanic National Honor Society (with EJ Jzar). This grant also supported the funding to allow a group of fluent Spanish speaking students and Health Careers majors to obtain certification as medical translators, which if received allows them an opportunity to obtain a well paid job right away once certification is received!

Eskenazi and the University of Indianapolis were also very impressed by our efforts of providing these certifications to our students, that they have followed suite with reduced fees for the certification process. This process gives certification to our students and alignment for training through Eskenazi's Bridging the Gap program. BDU staff member Robbie Foote is now engaged in the efforts to seek this opportunity to our students through his HIMT 110 Medical Terminology course!

Armstrong Educator Award winner in the house!

EJ Jzar was awarded the honor of being selected for the Armstrong Educator Award provided through IU Bloomington. She was selected as one of two teachers recommended as a candidate. This award provides mentoring and leadership to new teachers through their Teacher in Residence program!

EJ will travel down to IU to participate and engage in other activities in Indianapolis, starting with her recognition and awards luncheon on April 2nd on the IU campus.

EJ also received an enhanced role as part of her award as a Teacher-in-Residence for the program!

11th Annual Latino Fellows Day

BDU had an amazing group of scholars attend the 11th Annual Latino Fellows Day this week at the Indiana State House along with National Hispanic Honor Society sponsor & Spanish instructor Melissa Ballesteros and WBL sponsor Al Coleman. This group consisted of seniors: Francisco Guerra, Elizabeth Sanchez, Andrea Hermosillo, Jennifer Flamenco and junior, Jose Herrera. They represented our Early College program well and are destined to become future Latino leaders at the state level!
