Still Life Observation Drawing

During our exploration of shape and value, students explored drawing realistically and using value and shading to make objects appear more three-dimensional. Students then chose a personal object to bring in from home and draw as a still life from observation.

One Point Perspective Drawing

During our exploration of value and space, students utilized the concept of one point perspective and drew letters and shapes, connecting them to a vanishing point to create the illusion of three dimensional depth and space. They used markers and colored pencils to add color, using gradients to emphasize depth.

Cityscape Collage

During our exploration of shape and texture, students looked at and discussed “The Block” by African American artist, Romare Bearden. They noticed the variety of materials, textures and details in this mixed media collage. Students created their own collage of a city street, inspired by this work. They cut and glued a variety of different materials, shapes and textures to create a colorful and vibrant street scene.

Outer Space Oil Pastel Resist Paintings

During our exploration of color and space, students learned about using color and shading to create the illusion of three dimensional forms. Students created their own outer space scenes, using oil pastels, and used monochromatic and analogous colors to create 3D looking objects, like planets. After drawing, students painted their paper with black watercolor paint to create a resist.

Pop Art Prints

During our exploration of color and texture, students looked at and discussed the prints of artist Andy Warhol, who was part of the Pop Art movement in the 1960’s. Inspired by popular culture today, students drew a design onto styrofoam, using a stylus, to make their printing plate. They printed multiple copies of this plate, rolling out ink with a brayer. They used a variety of colors of ink -- even some multicolored rainbow roll prints. They selected their 3 best prints to mount, title and sign.
