Line Landscapes

During our exploration of line and shape, students learned about the elements of a landscape and created a landscape using a variety of different lines in marker to create foreground, middle ground and background.

Printed Robot

During our exploration of line and shape, students created robots by printing a variety of lines and shapes, using cardboard and paint. They added color to their robot using oil pastels, emphasizing different shapes, and painted the background with watercolor paint.

Romero Britto Inspired Paintings

During our exploration of shape and color, students looked at and discussed the work of Romero Britto, a contemporary Brazilian artist, and created paintings inspired by his colorful, whimsical style. Students also included complementary colors in their patterns.

Family Traditions Mixed Media Collage

During our exploration of shape and texture, students looked at and discussed the work of Mexican American artist Carmen Lomas Garza, who paints about her family and culture. Students created mixed media collages, using a variety of materials, about a family tradition or memory.

Cherry Blossom Painting

During our exploration of color, students looked at art from Japan and learned about Japanese cherry blossoms, or sakura, which bloom in the springtime. We used ink to paint branches and mixed at least 3 different tints of pink for the blossoms.

Japanese Gyotaku Artwork

During our exploration of color and texture, students learned about gyotaku, a method of printing fish which began in the 1800’s by Japanese fishermen. We made gyotaku with rubber fish, and used a variety of different techniques with watercolor paint, including wet-on-wet and salt, to create a background for the print.
