Students learned about and discussed the work of African American contemporary artist Bisa Butler and created portraits inspired by Butler's vibrant, quilted portraits.

Students learned about and discussed the work of American artist Georgia O'Keeffe, specifically her paintings of flowers. Students looked at photographs of flowers and drew them from observation, using oil pastels.

Students looked at American artist Roy Lichtenstein’s comic-inspired art and his use of onomatopoeia, a word that imitates the sound of an object or action. Students chose an onomatopoeia word and created a design to demonstrate the meaning visually, using primary colors and including benday dots in their design.

Students learned about and looked at examples of Pointillism, a technique of painting using small, distinct dots of color to form an image. Students used markers to create their own drawings in this style.

Students learned about African American author and illustrator Vanessa Brantley Newton and created their own self portraits inspired by her illustrations. Students included objects and symbols coming out of their heads that reflect their personalities, identities and interests.
