Students learned about African American author and illustrator Vanessa Brantley Newton and created their own self portraits inspired by her illustrations. Students included objects and symbols coming out of their heads that reflect their personalities, identities and interests.

Yayoi Kusama Inspired Pop Up

Students learned about and discussed the work of Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama, specifically her installations and use of polka dots. Students painted polka dots inspired by Kusama's work and transformed them into pop-ups with their self portrait included to represent themselves in a 3D "installation."
